Here’s my mix from the closing 2nd Sunday party. I had a total blast rockin the wood deck which was shaking like hell as the crowd jumped their asses off! Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a really special event.
From 1990 to 2005 Dubtribe Sound System, husband and wife Sunshine and Moonbeam Jones, gathered friends and family together and traversed the planet performing house music live for millions of people.
Allied with sit in and bring along percussionists, poets, painters, singers, and other musicians including Ray Lee, Nicky Sick, Babatunde, Primo Navaro, Matthew Brubeck, Karen Pfister, Chadwick Justin Minor, Richard Henry Scott, Lumo, Spiral Formatt, DJ Collage, Toast, Raymond St. Martin, DJ Lapaix, Kevin Wilson, and many others along the way, Dubtribe brought the idea that anything is possible, and that anyone can rise up and create art, political protest, and personal expression in the environment of DJ culture, rave, and night club or warehouse with a few simple devices and fire in your heart.
They arrived at a time when the world was in turmoil, the rave was a new idea which empowered people to gather and dance. Few followed the example set by Dubtribe, but many people were inspired to find their own road.
Dubtribe Sound System performed their final live concert at Cielo, in New York City on December 1st 2005. Many friends and family were in attendance, it was the perfect ending to a wonderfully indepenent, situationist, and punk rock road far too few people choose to travel with the passion and love that Sunshine and Moonbeam have.
May the beach always appear before you as the most beautiful dance floor in the world. Open up your mind, open up your heart, open up your hands, open up your mouth, open up your life, and set your spirit free.
The DJ/production duo from Chicago and San Diego respectively joined forces through their mutual admiration and passion for house music. One of their earliest productions, the seminal “Here Dis Sound”, on the respected San Diego based Siesta Recordings, has become the blueprint for much of the current wave of dub-influenced house music, a sound that has been picked up in the UK and Europe by scene stalwarts such as Pete Tong and Carl Cox. Both Halo & Hipp-e have also carved their own niches with solo productions, including Halo’s huge underground hit “My Sound” on Siesta and Hipp-e’s work with Tony (Tango Recordings) on labels such as Grayhound and Tango. Other producers from the West Coast scene to collaborate with Halo & Hipp-e include DJ Dan, Onionz, Master D, Terry Mullan and Angel Alanis. Collectively, this crop of producers have formed the 6400 crew for releases on Yoshitoshi, Electrik Soul, Shaboom & Siesta.Follow up EPs on Chicago’s Moody Recordings and Toronto’s Camouflage imprints have solidified the duo’s place at the top of the heap of new U.S producers. Most recently their sound has had a massive impact on U.K audiences, and labels such as Low Pressings (Peace Division), Soma, Shaboom and NRK have enlisted the production talents of Hipp-E & Halo for productions and remixes. NRK’s nite:life 02, a continuous DJ mix from Halo & Hipp-e, was an excellent introduction to those still new to the tech-house phenomenon, and to those in the know it was a fantastic collection of some of the most ground breaking and powerful house music sounds around, as mixed by two of the scene’s most charismatic and dedicated followers. The mix CD has since been cited as a major influence in the progressive/tribal/tech-house movement.

A native of the golden west, Hipp-E has pushed the envelope of dance music from the tender age of 16.
After years of parties and inspiration from other DJ’s and Producers, Hipp-e decided it was time to try his hand at making music that better suit the left-coast of the United States. Teaming up with partner Halo, the two produced a hybrid sound that paired the jackin’ beats of Chicago with the smoked out sounds of the Pacific. Known as the H-Foundation and 644 Crew, they produced tracks for Siesta Music in their new home of San Diego, their new friends at Soma in Glasgow, label giant Hooj Choons, and even for the East coast legends at Yoshitoshi. As a result, they drew the attention to the self-contained music industry of the West coast.
The next phase of his skyrocketing career saw him able to take his sound to the world in the form of his legendary DJ sets. Playing slots at Fabric London, Turbo Toronto, Zouks Singapore, Soma Glasgow, Twilo New York, more Amsterdam Pacha Buenos Aires, and Allenby Tel-Aviv turned the heads of the clubbers who thought they had seen and heard it all. His sets at raves in New Zealand, Montreal, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Brazil and all over the United States have reintroduced the concept that prime-time doesn’t mean prime-speeds and has the ravers listing for a change.
And even though one might wonder when he finds the time, Hipp-e has continued to push himself in the studio, developing a sound that belongs solely to him. His solo production for labels like NRK, Soma, Product Deluxe and Tango has garnered instant reaction from international DJ’s and has those more negative individuals that predicted some sort of Hipp-e / Halo backlash quickly zipping their lips. In addition to building his studio knowledge Hipp-e is venturing into more unknown territory. As A&R for San Francisco based Tango Recordings, he is able to take his knack for finding amazing records to play out and apply it to finding upcoming producers from around the world who will help to shape the future of dance music.
With a DJ schedule that shows no signs of slowing down, and a resume that already puts him at the top of his field, and an ever growing potential in the studio, Hipp-e will continue to realize his dreams and inspire the rest of the industry.
Ben Doren (2nd Sunday/levende/sf) has been DJing for 19 years, going way back to the mid-80’s in Chicago where he was born and raised, then during college in Iowa City, finally landing a permanent home in San Francisco from 1994 until today. Ben is the founder/talent booker/resident DJ of the legendary 2nd Sunday parties, and managing owner of 2 Bay Area venues, Levende Lounge (SF) and Levende East (Oakland). His big break in San Francisco was earning a weekly residency at the world-famous Release party at 1015 Folsom in 1997 which opened many doors, including a residency at mega-club Ruby Skye for the first 3 years they were open. Ben has played with all the biggest names in the industry at nearly every large, medium and even some small clubs and lounges in and around San Francisco and all over the US, including NYC, LA, Las Vegas, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, Miami, San Diego, Orange County, Sacramento, Tahoe, and outside the US in Mykonos, Greece and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For more info about Ben Doren:
Since 1997, DJ Rouzbeh began laying down the vinyl with one goal in mind, being able to work crowds to another state of mind. His passion for the sound and ability to remix tracks live led him to embark on the musical journey he has come to today. Rouzbeh’s ability to work the floor with creative sounds and effects sets him apart from the ‘average DJ’, and has led him to play alongside many world-class DJs. Taking one step further, he jumpstarted Back2Basics in 2000, and currently still manages enough time to be involved in event production. His talents – musical and business – have cemented his existence in the San Francisco house scene. If you have not had a chance to catch him at a LIVE performance, you are missing quite a show.

Von’s father started his record collection the day he was born, literally. He got his first turntable in 1990, but he could only afford one, so he was a turntablist by default. When he got his second turntable he was primarily a hip-hop dj, back when hip-hop was great. Back when it was hip-hop. As it began to turn sour in the late 90s he was turned onto house music. He was turned onto many different types of music at that time in his life, but deep, funky, soulful, weird House music was what he developed a passion for. He played nothing but house for about 5 years, but then it lost support and it became hard to find gigs as a “house dj”. So now He combines his life-long record collection, his skills as a turntablist, his trained ear as a house dj, and his passion for Jazz and Soul, and rocks parties as hard as he can.
DJ Rooz is known for his ability to play a wide variety of styles – progressive, tech, electro, and funky. Playing with DJs like Nick Warren, Seb Fontaine, and Derrick May (just to name a few), is enough said regarding his talent. In 2000 Rooz & Rouzbeh formed R-Squared, which is a wild display of music by the two remixing LIVE! Rooz has always been associated with San Francisco’s best DJs and promoters, so he has the credibility of his peers.
This true SF music visionary was not born, but instead he was forged from his Seattle hip-hop and rock roots to his bay area art and film school sensibilities. Paul has always walked a fine line with balance and focus. His electronic music compositions carry a strong conviction to detail along with the booming beats and synth melodies. In a word, his compositions represent “BASS”.New ideas, artistic visions and music insights spring forth from his otherwise centered body. As a label owner and DJ he is always set on pushing the sonic boundaries with little regret. In 2007 he launched the Zen Compound, home to Temple nightclub and Prana restaurant, an ambitious creative site grounded in his love for music, art, Eastern aesthetics and bringing the world together. Like similar large-scale Bay Area music projects (think Burning Man, and the City’s many festivals and street fairs), Temple nightclub and Temple Music Group (TMG) represent Hemming’s integrated artistic vision. His passions and experiences are incorporated throughout all his projects, such as including Asian sculpture in the nightclub space, or the recently released Prana music compilation, which features Eastern-tinged electronic compositions by Hemming and other TMG artists. Launching both the Nightclub and label simultaneously illustrates that Hemming has big plans for both his own artistic output and TMG’s growing roster.
Hemming’s many music productions span multiple genres from chunky disco grooves through richly melodic house music, solid breakbeak tunes and organic downtempo tracks. A lifelong music connoisseur, Hemming’s years of club, A&R and dance music retail experience is reflected in tracks that are cinematic, passionate and layered with colorful instrumentation. These features are also expressed in Temple, a multi-level, ecologically sustainable dance venue. With releases on several labels, and many to come on his own Temple Music Group imprint, Paul Hemming’s music will be banging out of club systems for some time.

He plays a very upbeat groovy, dirty and trippy style of tech from darker stuff to tribal. “When the listener walks in the room I want them to feel a theme, a presence, some sort of energy that grasps them, some sort of energy that they haven’t felt before but immediately feel how strong it is. As it begins to excite and energy dishes up from the DJ booth I begin to layout my sounds to lure the listener in on a journey they yet have realized… Its all about the latest sounds and tracks in underground techno, tech house, and electro instructed to tickle your mind till dawn. Its the perfect balance between dark, trippy, dirty, and melodic tracks that make you move with music that you haven’t heard before.” (Bo)Today Bo helps throw parties with Deep Blue Underground along with Dj Rooz and is one of the main resident DJs. At the age of 19 he became a resident for Billy Vidal and Adrian Jaffe’s VGevents. Soon after he began spinning with Bobak’s Peach Productions. Soon after he began adventuring to his true inspiration the underground after hours warehouse scene of SF, here he became a resident with the party “UpSwing” a monthly underground party put together by NK7 and other crews. This is where his sound began to evolve and he was able to push it to the next level as it became a lot more creative with a deeper, dirtier, trippy unique feel. Soon after he started throwing a lot of his own underground parties and helped start Deep Blue Underground with DJ Rooz. Originally Deep Blue was the name of the underground after hours warehouse parties they threw, which after a series of successful underground events over two years time Deep Blue Underground became a brand name for incredible parties that had some of the newest sounds of house and techno by some of the top local and world known DJs. Eventually this lead Deep Blue to regularly host these underground style parties at some of the top clubs of SF like club Mighty, 1015, Vessel, Harlot, Slide and others. Big shows with DJs such as Dubfire, Sharam, Francios K, Steve Lawler, Paul Ritch, Nic Fanculli and more.
Today Bo continues to push the Deep Blue Underground parties and his unique sound as it continues to evolve. He plays all over SF at clubs and underground after hours parties. His next step is music production, he has two new tracks coming out in 2010. Stay tuned….
DJ Thuy Vu embarked on her music journey with classical piano at the age of 9. From the age of 10, Thuy Vu has composed her own pieces and continues to do so today. By 16, she regarded the restrictions of reading sheet music as limiting and started to play by ear. Since then, she can play almost anything by ear including underground dance tracks as well as more popular hits.By the year 2001, influenced by electronica, she set out to DJ. She began to play at local clubs and kitschy bars in Southern California. Then came other parts of nightlife essentials ranging from benefit parties, art galleries slash nightclubs, local radio shows, skateboarding competitions, warehouse and house parties, film festivals, out-of-town gigs, and a summer tour in on the West Coast. Always keen to never limit herself, DJ Thuy Vu does not confine herself to one style and is known to play a multitude of electronica sub-genres, especially tech-house, deep house, progressive house, tribal house, breakbeats, downtempo, trip hop, idm, minimal, and everything in between. Her style can be described as raw, edgy, atmospheric, catchy and often coated with thick basslines, clean percussion, and vibrant pads and synths. She has started to DJ with elements such as performing with live vocals and playing her midi-controller as additional enhancement.DJ Thuy Vu’s musical quest is expanding as she is learning how to make better music. As of the moment, she has only written music on the piano, but is currently working on her production skills in the studio. Keeping the underground scene alive and pushing the music that accompanies it – these are top on DJ ThuyVu’s musical priorities, right up there with making people dance, rocking the crowd, and simply moving and stirring their hearts and souls.
DJ Thuy Vu is quickly rising as one of the most highly coveted female DJs in the San Francsico underground and club scene. Having moved here for less than one year from her socal roots, she has played at Supperclub, Matrix, the EndUp, Butter, Heights, Bambuddha Lounge, Hotel California, the Bodyshoppe, and soon to be more; and is the only female resident DJ of Afterwards and Deepblue, the heart of SF’s underground. Her sound, as described by SF’s most respected and beloved djs and promoters is “unique, sophisticated and refreshing because she’s a rare breed who plays what she plays and how she plays.”
A San Francisco native and DJ since 1991, DJ Taj emotes the artistic essence of the city’s counterculture history. He has both a unique look and mixing style that garners significant attention. Coupled with his diversity is his passion and dedication to the art of being a musician. Hard work has led him to prestigious West Coast residencies with club brands Spundae, in San Francisco, and United State of Consciousness, in Seattle. While maintaining these residencies for the past several years Taj has also performed at many illustrious parties and clubs, which have taken him to un unprecedented level as a West Coast DJ. In San Francisco Taj has played for seven continuous years at legendary club 1015 Folsom, held a two year residency at the famous Pablo’s Sugar Shack, as well as a three year residency at his self produced event Zendada. Taj has also maintained a two and a half year residency at Baby’s at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and is always a favorite at the Velvet club in St. Louis, including the headlining spot for their annual NYE “White Ball” for 2002.Introduced to music firsthand at the age of thirteen, Taj played the standup base. Learning to read and write music has naturally led him into producing. He teamed up with long time friend Dave D to form the production team “The Waller St. Boys”. Along with the Bay Area group ETI, they produced the successful LP “City of Gods” on Oboro Records. The LP sold more than 3,500 copies and was selected for several DJ mixed CDs within just a few months of its release.
Working diligently in the studio Taj aims to prove his talents as a producer to express how he feels about the music.
